Moving soon? Be aware that many pets find themselves on the run during this period, due to doors being left open, people repeatedly entering and leaving, and the stress caused by the commotion of moving furniture.

Precautionary measures

The following three tips will help keep your dog from running away during your move:

  • Put your dog in a crate or a closed room, away from the comings and goings, and all the noise.
  • Put your dog in a kennel or ask a friend to dog-sit on moving day.
  • Put your dog on a leash in the yard, where you can keep an eye on it.

If your pet is very sociable and calm, don’t hesitate to keep it by your side.

What to do if your dog runs away?

The following is a five-step plan to follow in case your dog runs away during your move:

  • Post a photo and description of your pet on social media, on your personal profile and in groups dedicated to lost and found pets. You can also post on lost and found pet directories like PawBoost. Don't forget to notify the SPCAs and animal shelters that serve your address.
  • Notify your veterinary clinic that your dog is missing.
  • Ask your neighbours to be on the lookout for your dog. Animals that run away often hide close to home.
  • Patrol the neighbourhood, calling your dog’s name. Be sure to have treats on hand. Also, make sure that someone is at home in case the dog decides to go back on its own.
  • Print posters with a color photo and a detailed description of your pet (size, microchip, special physical feature, nickname it answers to, etc.), as well as your phone number. Have them laminated to protect them from the rain. Distribute them in your neighborhood and post them on street corners near the last place your pet was seen. Also leave them at veterinary clinics, pet shops, dog parks, convenience stores and local grocery stores.

Identification methods

Here’s how to put all the chances on your side to ensure your loyal pet’s quick return home:

Install a microchip

More and more, microchips are becoming mandatory across Quebec. The advantages are obvious: every chip has a unique number that connects you to your pet and serves as a permanent means of identification. All veterinary clinics and SPAs have scanners that allow them to read the microchip and contact you immediately.

Opt for a collar with a tag

  • A city tag with a code that can be read digitally and is compatible with cell phones is now available in many municipalities, making it quick and easy to identify stray pets and reach their owners.
  • A rabies tag issued by a veterinarian reassures everyone that your pet is not sick and does not pose a threat to humans and other animals in the event of bites or fights.
  • A personalized tag with the dog’s name and a telephone number where someone can easily be reached at any time is also a good option (and can be added to the rabies tag). Mondou offers free in-store engraving with the purchase of a personalized medal.

It's important to bear in mind that tags are an external form of identification. If your dog loses his collar or doesn't have it on him at all times, it won't be much help!

Train your dog

Lastly, it is critical that you train your dog to come when called.

You now have several tips and tricks to keep your dog from running away or ensuring that it comes back home, safe and sound. Just make sure not to strain your back on moving day!
